It is a normal reaction for any living organism to respond to fear with the defensive mechanism “fight – flight”. In the early years it was a matter of survival, however in modern times this behavior remains in our DNA as an instinctive reaction to the feeling of fear. In this process, it is very possible that we do not realize that we experience a feeling of fear or we are unable to identify the stimulus that causes this feeling. However, our body activates this mechanism, as an automatic response to an involuntary stimulus. In some situations, it is possible to switch from one reaction to another, by alternating behaviors that correspond to each reaction.
The “fight – flight ” mechanism is very common in people who have experienced a severe traumatic event in the past or are currently under a general anxiety or regular panic attacks. Difficult experiences and a traumatic past can often activate this reaction, even when the situation may seem as harmless. However, the recollection of previous dangerous or undesirable experiences trigger the mechanism, as if someone lives again their trauma. It is very possible that we can recall a time when we wanted to escape from a situation or that we spontaneously reacted to a stimulus, as if we were to give our very own battle. And yet, it is just as likely that we cannot understand the real cause that would trigger fear in the same situation.
Therefore, the most important step is to first understand our status. Self-awareness and self-observation can help us realize that we are trying to fight or to avoid something. And we certainly need these to admit or even realize the fear we feel.
The “fight – flight ” mechanism is a normal process of our nervous system, that is there to protect us. If there is a stimulus that activates this mechanism, but we prevent ourselves to express these behaviors, if are hesitant of fighting or avoiding to escape, then the nervous system does not relax. This can cause intense irritation, anger, sadness or even various physical reactions such as headaches, dizziness, gastrointestinal problems, sleeping issues, etc.
Remember that it is perfectly normal to hide your fears. You may use the “fight – flight ” mechanism to recognize the stimulus of your fears and allow yourself to benefit from the power that lies beneath them.
